Birding in Belize completely allowed me to have a deeper appreciation for nature. I randomly decided one day to try a birding tour in Belize. This decision quickly turned into one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. If you are an avid birder, or even slightly familiar with the concept of birding, you will know that birders have to wakeup at ungodly hours in the morning to get ready and start their venture for the day. Birds are early risers, and to get the most out of your experience, you must rise early along with them.

Birding in Belize at Rio Maya Lodge

I woke up at 4:00am, in order to quickly get ready and make it in time for my tour. This was difficult for me because, I am in no way a morning person. I abhor waking up early and I love to sleep in, snuggled in my warm blanket, especially on cool days. However, I was persuaded by some of my friends to go on a birding trip to Rio Maya Lodge in the Cayo District of Belize. This is a beautiful jungle area that is privately owned and has neat trails that allow you to view a vast amount of birds that are on the land.

I am not a birder, and this was my very first time going birding. Thankfully, I had extremely knowledgeable bird guides, who were provided to my group by Mayawalk Tours, the most established tour company in the Cayo District of Belize. They helped us to spot countless birds and also helped us to identify some of the birds by sound, when we weren’t able to actually see them. There were times when we wanted to get a better view of a bird that we were looking at, so the company provided our group with a spotting scope to help us focus better.

After we left Rio Maya Lodge, we made our way to the Aguacate Lagoon, which is located about 20 minutes away from Spanish Lookout. This was a nice addition to the Birding Tour because it allowed us to see a different set of birds, typically found near water areas. Some of the types of birds that you can see at this spot are listed below.

  • Tricolored Munia
  • Northern-barred Woodcreeper
  • Rufous-tailed Jacamar
  • Blue Bunting
  • White-crowned Parrot
