I have found a few activities you can do in Belize that are not very popular, but are definitely worth doing. These activities, however, are a little less action packed than some of the more popular activities in Belize. If you need help to choose which activities you should add to your list when in Belize, feel free to contact me. I will gladly give you my opinion based on your interests and abilities.

Maya and Mennonite Cultural Village Tour

The Cultural Tour was a fun and enlightening experience for me. I think it is lovely to be able to learn more about the culture of a country that you are visiting. Granted, Belize has A LOT of different cultures, it would take forever to get a full experience of each one. However, this tour is a great way to start learning about some of them.

Being welcomed into the home of a local Mennonite was something I thought I would never experience. Their way of life is so simplistic and natural. I loved how open the family was with answering the different questions we had and explaining how a typical day in their life would unfold.

I also loved visiting the Women’s group who did the Mayan portion of the tour. The food that they served was AMAZING. It was one of the most delicious dishes I have ever eaten. We also got a chance to make our own home-made corn tortillas from scratch. They allowed us to each have a turn grinding the corn and forming it into a tortilla, which they baked for us on a comal.

We got to try our hand at creating pottery out of clay. This was a very interesting and funny experience for us. We had a great time looking at the “masterpieces” that the volunteers made. Creating pottery out of clay is harder than it seems.

Barton Creek Cave Canoeing

Barton Creek is an experience that I would not typically be excited to try. The thought of canoeing through a cave system, not only scared me (because I don’t know how to swim), but I also found it hard to understand how something like this could be fun. I was proven wrong, however, because I thoroughly enjoyed my time doing this activity.

Barton Creek Cave

I will admit, my fear of flipping over in the canoe remained with me throughout the entire experience. However, my guide skillfully helped me to remain calm and I learned a lot on this tour. The Barton Creek cave was absolutely beautiful to behold. The water in the cave was very blue and pretty when we shined our lights on it.

If you are looking for a half day activity that is calming and doesn’t require too much physical activity, you should consider doing the Barton Creek Cave. You can also ask the guide to allow you to paddle the canoe for a little while.

Birding in Belize

Birding in Belize isn’t something that regular locals tend to do. It is an activity widely done by the avid birders in Belize. There is a group of men and a few women who have picked up the art of birding. They spend all of their free time going out to different parts of Belize and observing, taking pictures of, and recording the different types of birds that they find.

There are many locations in Belize that you can do birding. Two of the places I have personally tried it are at Rio Maya Lodge and at Black Rock Lodge. If you would like to bird at any of these places, send me a message and I can help you to arrange it.

Crystal Cave

Crystal Cave is an intense experience, in my opinion. I have still not tried this activity as yet, mainly due to fear. I really need to work on cancelling fear and becoming more adventurous.

To enter the crystal cave, you have to do a short rappelling into the structure. You will be crawling and climbing through small, tight spaces in order to reach the main attraction, which is crystal-like formations, in the cave. I promise that I will some day do this activity and give you a more in-depth account of my experience.

Sadly, the Crystal Cave is not very popular, mainly because of the level of difficulty it brings. However, many people have done it and they all have amazing things to say about their experience. You don’t have to be extremely physically fit in order to do this activity. Just take about 2 liters of water and you should be fine. If the ATM cave is closed due to flooding, the Crystal Cave can be a very good replacement tour. Due to is being a dry cave, it will not close if there is a lot of rain.

*Please note, this activity is not for you if you are claustrophobic.* If you would like more information on what you’ll experience during this tour, click on the “Crystal Cave” heading above.

If you are brave enough to try this activity, please tell me about your experience. Maybe hearing some of your stories will help me to overcome my fear.  😄
