I recently had a conversation with a friend and I was asked to stop celebrating something “small” that occurred in their life. It is possible that my friend thought the event was inconsiderable, and did not find much joy in it. However, I am very proud of my friend and I believe even greater things are ahead. I am a firm believer in celebrating the smallest things in life. This makes you a happier individual. I will list some of the “small moments” that I always try to find time to take in and enjoy, while I can.

1. Finding joy in the wind that caresses your face as you swing in a hammock

Belize has many different islands, cayes and some towns and cities that are close to the sea-side. I love to travel, and whenever I do travel, I like to lie in hammocks and feel the cool wind on my face and body as I gently rock from side to side. I would close my eyes for a few minutes and think of nothing besides the blissful moment I am currently in. None of the pressures I am currently facing in my life can break through that barrier when I decide to enjoy the moment.

Living in a tropical paradise sometimes lets us Belizeans forget how blessed we are to be so close to a beautiful sea. Many people from all over the world spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars every year to experience what we have on a daily basis. I try to always remain thankful.

2. Finding joy in the birds chirping as you sit near a river in the forest

This is yet another wonder to behold. Whenever I find myself in nature, I try to take in the sounds of the birds and other animals surrounding me. They might be playing, looking for their next meal, or trying to build a comfortable nest for their eggs. Whatever it is that they are doing, I take some time to listen to their melodious chirps and songs.

3. Finding joy in the different animals you see as you go about your day

Have you ever been on a walk/hike and saw butterflies, rabbits, iguanas and other wild life running around? Or, have you ever seen a cute squirrel quickly run up a tree or a pole as you are walking by, or simply looking out of your window. I find so much joy in those things. I love the freedom these animals have and watching them playing and just living their life. It helps to remind me to slow down sometimes and try to enjoy the moment that I am in. When I visit a new resort, or when I go on a tour, I love to look for the little things that others might not readily see. I absolutely love when my tour guide points out a beautiful bird, or interesting plant/tree. The little things are what adds to my experiences.

4. Finding joy in kind acts

I arrived at work one day and I saw breakfast neatly placed on top of my desk, and my office was freshly sprayed with an air freshener. This simple act was done by one of my coworkers and I will never forget how it made me feel. I was so grateful for the small thoughtful act. It greatly made my day, and I told many people about it.
