There are countless popular activities to do when in Belize. I have still not discovered all of them, as yet. However, I do know some of the most popular ones. Check out my list below and let me know which one is your favorite. If you would like help to choose which one would suit you the best, feel free to send me a message. I will gladly give you my opinion, to help you make the best decision.

Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM Cave)

If you are visiting Belize and consider yourself to be an adventurous person, then the ATM Cave is a MUST do. I am only semi-adventurous, but I still enjoyed this experience. I also do not know how to swim, but I still did it, and I survived. 😁

This adventure consists of a 45-minute hike, where you’ll cross a river 3 times. The first river crossing is approximately 8ft deep. The other two are about ankle-deep to knee-deep. After this hike, you will arrive at the entrance of the cave, which has water about 12ft deep that you will have to swim across. You’ll be walking through water in the cave before arriving at the dry chamber. To get to this chamber, you will need to climb a rock boulder. No shoes are allowed at this part of the cave, so I advise you to take along a pair of socks so that your feet have some sort of padding.

There are skeletal remains, in the cave, and pottery left behind by the ancient Mayans. I promise you that this is not your regular caving experience. Come to Belize and find out what all the hype is about the ATM Cave. Click on the heading if you would like a more in-depth explanation of this experience.

The Tikal Mayan Site is another very popular activity to do when you are in Belize. Booking this adventure with a tour operator is very quick and easy. In order to have a smooth and fast border crossing, the tour leaves early in the morning.

Fun Fact: The Tikal Mayan site was used as a filming location for Star Wars.

Tikal was actually one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. Many tourists and even Belize locals, visit this great site to learn more about its history and to take in the beautiful surroundings and structures.

Caracol Mayan Site

Caracol is the largest Mayan site in Belize. It is a very popular attraction because of how beautiful the structure and its surroundings are. At one point in time, Caracol was able to successfully conquer Tikal. You will learn about this history and much more through a guided tour of this site. This tour is also typically paired with a visit to Rio on Pools and Rio Frio Cave, or Big Rock Waterfalls. Due to this, you get to swim and cool down on these hot days in Belize.

Some people choose to visit this structure on their own. If you choose this option, I advise you to have a 4-wheel drive vehicle that is good on rough and muddy terrains. If you visit Caracol after it has been raining, the roads get extremely muddy and hard to drive through. You would need to ensure that the vehicle you are using will be able to successfully make it to and from the site. Many people get stuck on the roads to Caracol every year, and that is never a fun experience. Your phone won’t have reception in that part of Belize, so you will have to depend on the kind hearts of other travelers passing by.

Caracol is a very fun experience. If you would like to take away the hassle of finding the right vehicle to go on this adventure, feel free to make a booking with one of the best tour operators in the Cayo District, Mayawalk Tours.

Cave Tubing

Many tourists and locals plan trips to the Nohoch Che’en Cave in Belize in order to do a Cave Tubing Tour. This is a fun and relaxing experience that everyone in your family can enjoy. The water is very beautiful and clear in many areas. There is also an area in one of the caves that you can climb on a rock and jump into the water. (You don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.)

Diving and Snorkeling

Diving at Shark Ray Alley and Hol Chan are two very popular activities to do in Belize. I have not garnered the courage as yet to go swimming with sharks. However, if you have more courage than I do, then this would be an amazing experience for you.

You can easily book these activities with tour operators located in Caye Caulker and/or San Pedro.

I will soon be publishing a post about the not so popular activities to do in Belize. Keep a lookout for that one. It will include some more amazing adventures that you can experience in Belize.
